Raphael Sanzio was for years called "the Prince of Painters" for his own good looks but also for his great and original contributions to painting and drawings.  He was not as much of an innovator as Michelangelo or daVinci; instead, his works are the best embodiment of the ideals of the Italian Renaissance, emphasizing the dignity of humans, their intelligence, admirable conduct and grace.  The occasion prompting this lecture was the great Raphael exhibition which took place at the Metropolitan Museum in New York last spring.
